Creator of CustomPiOS/OctoPi here 
I give you LEDPotato - you flash the ready image, edit the python file with any logic you like, plug a LED strip to the Le Potato on pin 8, boot and it starts right after booting.
Backstory:
I found it a little less straight forward to control ws2812 LEDs with the Le Potato. Thanks to @dsx724 on github I managed to get them working, but my friend who has 10 Le Potatos had trouble following the install steps. He wanted a quick an easy to get LED strips running.
So I created a distribution using CustomPiOS which has now support to build Le Potato images.
BTW, perhaps it would be a good idea to add a “projects” or “show and tell” section here.
